Mateo Shakai lives in a remote rainforest in Ecuador, accessible only by canoe and small brush planes. His people, the Achuar, were the last tribe contacted by the civilized world, and still live largely without it. They are a small tribe, spread out over a few million acres of untouched rainforest. Their community thrives by hunting, gathering, and by maintaining small gardens. Their life is the forest, and the river, both of which are threatened by the oil industry.

He is here to visit his friend, Sam Crothers, and to share the magic of the Achuar culture with the people of the US. His dream is to create an Achuar museum to hold the stories and artifacts of an ancient people.
