Wanda Holmes
Some people work in a community. Wanda Holmes has spent nearly three decades being part of one. As Assistant Manager at Billy's Downtown Diner, Wanda is the first face many guests see and the steady presence that holds the team together. But her roots in Easton run far deeper than any one job. She has been a familiar, beloved figure in this city for close to 30 years, and the impact she has made in that time is nothing short of extraordinary.
At 73, Wanda has a gift for making people feel seen, whether it's a longtime customer she greets by name, a new employee who needs guidance, or a stranger who walks in cold and hungry. On more than one occasion, Wanda has quietly given away her own staff meal to make sure someone else didn't go without. That is simply who she is.
Her generosity extends well beyond the diner's walls. Every holiday season, Wanda donates more than 30 turkeys to homeless individuals and local churches. She volunteers at Second Baptist Church in Bethlehem, where she has worshipped since childhood. She is a mother, wife, grandmother to seven, and great-grandmother; and by all accounts, she shows up for every single one of them with the same fierce love she brings to everything else.
Billy's owners Billy Kounoupis and John Jaindl say she is the true embodiment of what their restaurant stands for. Her coworkers call her a cornerstone. Her family calls her the heart of everything. And in Easton, most people just call her legendary.
